Walking at Noord-Beveland

Noord-Beveland is the smallest island in Zeeland and, like the other parts of Zeeland, has a long history of land reclamation, dams, and storm surges. It’s a true paradise for walkers and cyclists.

While walking along the dikes, you can enjoy expansive views of the Veerse Meer or the Oosterschelde, as well as the typical polder landscape. Noord-Beveland boasts an impressive 75 kilometers of walking trails. The walking network connects various routes, and at the intersections, you'll find numbered junctions. Cycling Noord-Beveland

Noord-Beveland is a paradise for cyclists. The island offers a rich variety: you cycle along dikes with wide views of the water, through peaceful polders with grazing cows, past historic villages, and along the shores of the Veerse Meer and the Oosterschelde. With approximately 119 km of cycling paths, part of the provincial junction system (FIKS), recreational cyclists have plenty of opportunities to explore.

The bike paths are well-maintained, allowing for both short leisurely rides and longer, more intense tours. Thanks to the junction system, you can easily create your own route.

Mountain biking

Noord-Beveland has a dedicated mountain biking network of around 75 kilometers, divided into three well-marked routes: West, Central, and East. These trails take you along the three surrounding waters of the island: the North Sea, the Veerse Meer, and the Oosterschelde, offering a true island experience.

The routes are varied: you'll cycle along dikes, shell paths, gravel trails, singletracks, and even ferries. Along the way, you'll pass through small forests, wetland areas, creeks, and water features. There is an official MTB code of conduct: stay on the marked trails, respect nature, leave no litter, and ride in small groups.

A round trip with the ferry

A trip on the water is a must when you're on holiday in Zeeland. With the bike and foot ferry, you can quickly get from A to B across the Veerse Meer. From April to September, a ferry operates from Noord-Beveland (Kamperland) to Walcheren (Veere). During the summer months, there is also a ferry from Noord-Beveland (Kortgene) to Zuid-Beveland (Wolphaartsdijk).

Wetlands Noord-Beveland

The inland wetlands of Noord-Beveland are a hidden gem for nature lovers and those seeking peace. These distinctive water areas and marshlands create a beautiful interplay of water, reeds, and wide-open views. Birds such as avocets, geese, and kingfishers call this place home, while the tranquility invites you to take a leisurely walk, cycle, or simply enjoy the view. Here, you can experience the unique combination of Zeeland’s history, rare flora and fauna, and a sense of pure calm that you won’t find anywhere else.

Sandbanks in the Veerse Meer

The Sandbanks in the Veerse Meer are a paradise for water and nature enthusiasts. These shallow sandbars and mudflats create a stunning backdrop of shimmering water, reed beds, and swaying dune grasses. Birds such as avocets, terns, and spoonbills nest here in peace, while the clear waters invite you to sail, paddleboard, or swim. A visit to the Sandbanks means enjoying the silence, the nature, and the unique sense of space that makes the Veerse Meer so special. The nature reserve Middelplaten is not accessible, but the other sandbars can be reached by boat. These islands are typically equipped with docking piers and picnic tables.

Nature reserve De Goudplaat

De Goudplaat was formed after the closure of the Veerse Gat, when the sandbank remained permanently dry due to the absence of tidal ebb and flow. Today, it is an attractive nature reserve managed by Staatsbosbeheer. At the southern tip of the Goudplaat, a small herd of Konik horses roams in a fenced area of 40 hectares. These horses were introduced to help prevent the growth of woodland. Golden tip: It may take a little searching, but if you follow the trail marked with yellow posts from the parking lot, you're sure to spot the herd! The area is also home to cattle, roe deer, and fallow deer. During the spring and autumn seasons, guided tours are offered, including a nature boat tour on the Veerse Meer to the nearby island of De Haringvreter.

Nature reserve De Schotsman

De Schotsman is a remarkably beautiful nature reserve located at the western tip of Noord-Beveland, near Kamperland. It is part of the Veerse Meer nature area that was formed after the closure of the Veerse Gat. De Schotsman is a peaceful walking area with diverse and unique flora and fauna. Birdwatchers will find plenty to see and hear! In the oak and ash forests, you can spot nightingales, green woodpeckers, tawny owls, and woodcock. The marked hiking trails, managed by Staatsbosbeheer, guide you through the most scenic spots of the reserve. Be aware that some paths in this nature area may be muddy, so be prepared for a more adventurous walk!

National Park Oosterschelde

The Oosterschelde is the largest of the Dutch national parks, covering 37,000 hectares and stretching over 125 kilometers of coastline. A place to truly enjoy! Around, in, and on the Oosterschelde, there's something for everyone: cycling, hiking, boating, diving, birdwatching, and so much more!

De Meeuwenduinen

De Zeepeduinen

De Zeepeduinen have traditionally been part of the Slot Haamstede estate. Located a few kilometers from the sea, they are one of the few inland dune areas that have not been used for agriculture or urban development. The landscape is varied, featuring forests, grasslands, moss plains, and bare sand. Around ninety Shetland ponies also graze in the area to help keep the landscape open and maintain its natural character.
